Dyson Corrale review: Better than GHD?uscsc.org

The British engineering company Dyson is known to many for its vacuum cleaners. But these colorful plastic sweepers are far from the only products in your portfolio.

After entering the hair care industry with the excellent Supersonic hairdryer in 2016, followed a few years later with the fantastic hairdresser Airwrap, Dyson took the next logical step with the Corrale straightener.

With flexible irons, wireless technology, high-end design and a high price, is the Dyson Corrale straightener perfect for GHD?

High-end design

Dimensions: 292 x 45 x 41 mm / Weight: 561 g

Finishes: black nickel and fuschia, purple and black

With design features similar to the Dyson Airwrap Styler and Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer, the Corral Hair Straightener looks like a pair of far superior flat irons with the distinctive industrial look we expect from Dyson hair care products.

Everything from the charming velvet pouch/heating mat and heavy base load carrier to the thick round bar and simple OLED screen, the Corrale straightener is exquisitely designed.

And that's before touching on wireless technology, the 360-degree magnetic charger, the flexible plates themselves, more in a minute, and the three heat options included in this set of rectifier features.

At the front of the Corral (or on one side when not in the holder), you will find the small OLED screen, which displays the three temperature settings: 165C (330F), 185C (365F) and 210C (410F), and the battery indicator once you have selected the desired temperature. Below the displays are physical plus and minus buttons to increase or decrease the temperature and a power button. The sliding safety lock mechanism is located under the power button.

On the back (or on the other side) of the Corrale is an airplane symbol that highlights the smart lever that you can lift to disconnect the battery for a safe flight mode. Very useful for those traveling, even if it is a little weaker than expected. You should also place your hand between the plates to release it and make sure they are cool.

Despite the overall premium design, the Corral plate is huge, significantly larger and heavier than our old GHDs. The Dyson product is also heavier by 250 g than GHD's latest pair of irons, the Platinum Plus. That said, where Dyson loses notes for much of the Corral, it compensates for the performance, because the Corrale is really something in terms of results.

How is Corrale technology different?

Three temperature settings: 165C (330F), 185C (365F), 210C (410F)

Intelligent heat control to maintain a constant temperature.

Copper and magnesium alloy plates

Automatic shutdown after 10 minutes

So how does Dyson Corrale get good results? Seven years of preparation (and an investment of £ 25 million), it is not surprising that there is a lot of technology inside the Dyson Corrale straightener. What is surprising is that the company did not follow the same air flow path as the Airwrap moulder.

Instead, he opted for heat and flexible plates coated with a copper-magnesium alloy. Each of the 15-section plates is machined to be flexible and provide enough pressure to hold and style hair evenly along its length. Each plate is also precision machined to 65 microns, the width of a human hair and the edges are coated to produce ionizing properties that reduce static electricity.

The flex is not very visible: lower the plates with your finger and they click and move, but we are not talking flexibly like pinging a plastic ruler here. It's a subtle flex, the idea is that it flexes around your hair to grip the entire section, including the wispy parts, which means that in theory you only need to check each section only once.

Competitors like GHD use ceramic plate technology, which uses heat only to break hair joints for styling, not Corrale's combined method of heat and tension.

Often you will need to pass the same section of hair several times with a pair of ceramic straighteners before you get a super smooth effect, since ceramic plates usually lose their effectiveness when you move downwards, which further damages your hair. like hair exposed to more heat for a longer period of time. Traditional straighteners also pull on your hair and break delicate tips, unlike flexible Corrale plates.

Like the Dyson Airwrap, the Corrale straightener also has intelligent heat control, but when the Airwrap checks the temperature 50 times per second, the Corrale will double it, checking it 100 times per second to make sure it doesn't exceed not the temperature it has. together.

Last but not the least on the technological level, the Corrale has an automatic 10-minute stop function, really practical for those of us who leave the house in a hurry and wonder halfway if these straighteners are going to to burn down the house. Come on, we all have.

Wireless battery performance

Four-cell lithium battery, recharges in 70 minutes
30-minute wireless use (at setting 185C / 365F)
4.34 meter cable (with cable)

The Dyson Corrale straightener can be used cordless or wired. Obviously, wireless is the big story here, removing the irritation from tangled plugs and cables from the equation (although Corrale's 360-degree magnetic cord is more practical than others we've tested, especially in regarding curling).

Dyson says the Corral straightener's four-cell lithium-ion battery will last about 30 minutes, which we thought was very effective, although we would say that you will have a few more minutes at the lowest temperature.

We use the medium temperature setting (185C / 365F) for our hair because it is thick, thick and long. Thankfully, we didn't run out of battery style at any point during our review period when we tested the wireless capabilities, which was a bonus, as our unbrushed hair isn't our best look, so half would be pretty awful.

In the medium temperature setting, which is the same as the single temperature option offered by the GHD Platinum Plus, around 30 to 35 minutes is a safe bet, while in the highest temperature setting you should do this in 25 minutes if you don't want to connect

When you connect the Corrale using the very reassuring magnetic mechanism, either on the support or on the plates themselves, they are fully charged in 70 minutes, or you will receive a 90% charge in 40 minutes if you are more desperate.

Of course, you will not always need wireless capabilities. Chances are, if you're at home, you're going to plug in the Corrale straighteners if you're planning a longer styling session, like curly.

However, wireless is useful when you're not near a power outlet, such as a quick change from day to night in a restaurant bathroom or a quick car repair. Rarely, but even more than the possible scenarios.

Excellent quick results

When it comes to styling performance, the Dyson Corrale straightener is absolutely excellent, as is the Airwrap. Our hair feels and looks much healthier and shinier than when we used our old GHD irons, and we found that the straightened style stayed fairly close until we washed our hair, without the need for brushing. .

Going through the hair section once was 90% sufficient, the Corrale and the remaining 10% only taking twice, which actually took some getting used to, as we were used to going through the same section several times to get the look we wanted. That meant we could fix our hair in 15 minutes, that's half the time compared to our current straighteners (yes, really).

Our hair didn't get caught or broken at all when using the Corrale, whether it was straightened or curled, which matters a lot. We can't say if our hair is "up to 50% less damaged," as Dyson claims, but it certainly is.

In terms of curling, the Corral hair straighteners do a great job, although even though the weight of the Corrale is not noticeable when straightening, it was curly (although we do have a lot of hair). The smooth, rounded outer barrel also helps provide a nice curly finish, although we still opt for the Airwrap for a dry, bouncy look.

Corrale straighteners heat up quickly, approximately 35 seconds at 165 ° C / 330 ° F, followed by an additional 10 to 15 seconds per temperature setting thereafter, and a comfortable beep lets you know when they are ready to reach the temperature that you selected.

You can also see the gauge increase on the OLED screen and the battery gauge on the screen is useful for knowing how long you should do this style.

Verdict

The Dyson Corrale hair straightener is fantastic in many ways. Its design performance is phenomenal, offering a smooth and elegant finish, both straight and curly. Its wireless design is handy, even if it's not something you'll use all the time. Having three temperature settings is also helpful, and we love the OLED screen, the charging cradle, and the fact that we only needed to check the hair sections once, which saves our hair and time .

These excellent attributes come at a high price - the GHD Platinium Plus costs around half the price. The Dyson design, although high-end, is also quite large and heavy due to its battery and technology, which can be laborious for longer design sessions.

If your budget allows, your hair will love you for buying the Corrale. It is a fantastic straightener that keeps its promise and leaves our hair smoother and more silky in less time than usual.
